OCEAN PULSE
NOAA buoy data, artfully
Ocean Pulse’s shown:
”Channel Islands” (L) & “Left Coast” (R)
"Ocean Pulse" is an immersive light installation that employs light waves to visualize ocean waves, drawing inspiration from renowned light-based artists such as James Turrell and Olafur Eliasson while establishing its own unique connection to the ocean's dynamic energies.
By translating real-time swell data – swell direction, period, and height – into an engaging visual language of color, intensity, and movement, this artwork fosters a deeper connection to the powerful forces governing our natural world.
Through the use of light waves, "Ocean Pulse" not only mirrors the ocean's vastness and ever-changing qualities but also echoes the inherent interconnectedness between light and water, perception and experience. This subtle nod to the parallels between the two types of waves enhances the immersive nature of the installation.
Similar to Turrell's exploration of perception and space through light, "Ocean Pulse" invites viewers to experience the ocean's vastness and ever-changing qualities, altering their perception of the environment in a transfixing and meditative form. Eliasson's influence is evident in the work's interplay between nature and human experience, as the installation brings the ocean's complex patterns into an accessible and interactive format, no matter the viewer’s location in the world.
This captivating piece encourages viewers to cultivate a relationship with the ocean's nuanced patterns over time, mirroring the intimate bond formed by individuals who visit the ocean as a daily ritual.
Each Ocean Pulse is designed and hand-built by the artist, made-to-order.
THE OCEAN PULSE SERIES
For each new series, I produce 10 pieces - made to order.
“Harvest”
Named after the buoy anchored 20 miles off of Point Conception, California. Harvest buoy is the harbinger for swell coming into the Santa Barbara Channel. With a strong Circular negative space defined by the light that fills it, Harvest creates an almost orb-like effect as the light pulses. This is one of my personal favorites to meditate over.
“Chromosphere”
Inspired by the total solar eclipse I was fortunate enough to witness in person with my family in Indiana, Chromosphere explores the interconnectedness of the sun, the moon, and our waves.
